DutchBSD B.V. is a Dutch company that develops software and provides engineering consultancy. We work on applications for businesses and organisations, alongside the infrastructure and online services behind them.

What DutchBSD does

Software products

We are building tools that make running a business simpler. That includes applications for everyday work and tools for managing the technology a business relies on.

Our first product is MakeSite, a website builder for creating, editing and publishing websites, with hosting included.

Engineering consultancy

We provide engineering consultancy in BSD-based systems, infrastructure, content delivery networks and practical AI. This work is separate from our software products: customers can work with DutchBSD on an engineering problem without adopting a DutchBSD application.

Our approach

We aim to keep systems understandable and maintainable. We favour tools with a clear purpose, dependencies that justify their place and solutions that fit the problem.

Simplicity does not mean avoiding difficult problems. It means being deliberate about which complexity is necessary and which can be removed.

This approach applies to both our products and our consultancy. The requirements may differ, but the intention is the same: useful software and systems that remain manageable beyond their initial setup.

Why the name DutchBSD?

The name is a play on OpenBSD, FreeBSD and NetBSD. It combines their naming pattern with the fact that we are a Dutch company specialising in BSD-based solutions.

The name reflects our technical background, rather than a requirement for our customers to use BSD themselves.

Why we work with BSD

We work with BSD because it fits our preference for stability, simplicity and systems we can understand and maintain. These qualities matter both when we build software and when we operate the infrastructure behind it.

For most users, the operating system stays behind the scenes. They interact with the applications and services built on top of it. Using our applications does not require learning BSD or changing the operating system on their own devices.

Large-scale video delivery is a familiar example of this separation: the appliances that serve the streams commonly run FreeBSD, while viewers only ever interact with the player and the application around it. The operating system supports the service without being something its users need to manage.

BSD is our preference, not a rule that every project must follow. We also work with other systems where they suit the requirements.

The founder behind DutchBSD

DutchBSD was founded by Wouter Spee. His background includes serving as VP Engineering at Spil Games and co-founding Warpcache, a multi-CDN company.

His work spans infrastructure, content delivery, software development and engineering leadership. That experience informs DutchBSD’s approach to both product development and consultancy.

Frequently asked questions

Is DutchBSD the same as MakeSite?

No. DutchBSD is the company, and MakeSite is its first software product. DutchBSD also provides engineering consultancy.

Are DutchBSD’s products only for technical users?

No. Each product serves a particular purpose and audience. Our specialisation in BSD describes part of how we build and operate software, not the technical knowledge every customer needs.

Can I work with DutchBSD without using one of its products?

Yes. Engineering consultancy is a separate part of our work. You do not need to use MakeSite or another DutchBSD product to discuss a project with us.
